Cannot use rich text in a button with material style

I have been trying to add superscript to a button in my app for a while, but it hasn't been working, though once I decided to change the button style to Widget.Button instead of Widget.Material.Button, the superscript was formated correctly. I'm still new to android and have no idea what in the material button style could be causing the text to not format correctly. Any help would be appreciated.
