can we use xsl:stripspace in xsl:copy-of select function?

input xml:

  A.

</ce:given-name>

 <ce:surname>

   Bernal

 </ce:surname>

output xml:

A.

Bernal

in my xsl i used

but it not works.

can anyone help me to remove this spaces.
